12 Hours in Frankfurt

Tour Bus

Kara and I on the Tour Bus

After flying the red eye from Miami to Frankfurt we were sort of energized enough to venture around Frankfurt. I have heard that the best way to see a city in a short time was to take a bus tour and that is exactly what we did. We booked our all-day tickets on the double decker city tour bus. The tickets were hop-on/hop-off which allowed us to use the bus as a taxi (I would highly recommend this to anyone for any city).

Frankfurt is the main financial center of Germany and much of Europe, so this didn’t quite yield the most exciting sights. There was a lot of history as to why Frankfurt became the main financial center for Europe, but not so much visual. Most of Frankfurt was completely destroyed in WWII. There were a number of historical areas and churches that were rebuild in historical fashion years after the war, but overall it was a modern city with sky scrapers and high-density housing.

It was still cool to wander around and test out my Deutsch sprechen. Most everyone spoke English just as well as their native German language. Kara and I stopped by a historic looking restaurant to enjoy a few beers and some Apfelwine; which is a dry cider similar to the ones that I make by adding wine yeast to apple juice. After filling up with that and some schnitzel we made our way back to the airport for the remainder of our wait. This is where the lack of sleep really took its toll on us. Another beer in the airport and we were fighting to stay awake.

mmm... Bier!

mmm… Bier!

The overall experience was really cool and it was great to get the chance to explore the city. If I would do it again I would prefer not to have a 13 hour layo
ver, it was just a little too long.
