Not too many people know this, but I was so into fish when I was a little kid that I actually made a ‘Name that Fish’ game for my friends in middle school. I traced the fish from a fish identification guide, gave them a points scale and laminated it. Now I’m with some people that actually understand (plus I married one).

As part of the reef surveys that we’ll be doing we need to learn all of the common fish that we’ll be seeing on the reef. There are about 100 common reef fish ranging from the small damsel fish to the odd unicorn fish and many snappers and Trevally that roam the coral reef ecosystem. Kara and I have our fish exam on Monday, which we need to score at least a 90% on to be allowed to do fish surveys. The test will be 50 slides with 5 seconds to write down each answer. This will be the first of 3 quizzes that we have to take. The other two types of surveys are invertebrates and corals. Wish us luck!

UPDATE May 9th:

We passed our fish and invertebrate tests with swimming colors. I scored a 94% and Kara had a 90%. They had a few tricky fish pictures that made it hard to score perfect, but for our first run at we were happy. We both scored 94% on the shorter invertebrate test.
